The origin of Sri Panchamukhi
In Ramayana when Rama and Lakshmana were taken in the Pathala Loka by Mahiravana who was the king of Pathala, disguised himself as Vibhishana on the pretext of Ravana. When Hanuman went in search of Lord Rama and Lakshmana he found out that to kill Mahiravana he had to extinguish five lamps that were burning in different directions at the same time. So Hanuman took the Panchamukhi form i.e Hanuman, Hayagriva, Narasimha, Garuda, and Varaha Faces and extinguished the lamps, and killed Mahiravana.
The five faces of Panchamukhi has been related as follows:
The face facing East- Ishtha Siddhi – Anjaneya
South facing-Abhishta Siddhi--Karala Ugraveera Narasimha
West Facing-Sakala Saubhagya- Maheevira Garuda
North Facing-Dhana Prapthi-Lakshmi Varaha
Urdhva Mukha-facing sky- Sarva Vidya Jaya Prapthi-Hayagriva
The 5 faces of Hanuman depict the five divine forms in which the prayers are offered to God
i.e Naman, Smaran, Keerthanam, Yachanam, and Arpanam.
Lord Hanuman always did Naman(chant), Smaran(meditate), and Keertan (Sing hymns) of Lord Rama. Lord Hanuman fully surrender himself at the feet of Lord Rama, Arpana, and Yachanam, lord Hanuman also begged Lord Rama to bless him the undivided love.
